In the 1970s there were plans to build lots of houses and a road in the Spiez Bay. Luckily it was rmet by opposition in Spiez. The association «green bay Spiez» was successful for many years in preventing that. In 1990 the association of the Swiss cultural heritage protection gave an award for its activities for the protection of the Spiez Bay. During this ceremony the environmentalist Franz Weber from Montreux made the legendary statement: «Spiez has the most beautiful bay in Europe».
